FROM THE ICE AGE
More than 20,000 years ago, the massive Laurentide Ice Sheet advanced across New England, grinding rock beneath thousands of feet of moving ice and carrying enormous amounts of sediment southward.
As the glaciers retreated, torrents of meltwater deposited sand, gravel, and mineral fragments, creating much of the landscape we now know as Cape Cod.
For thousands of years, Atlantic waves have continued the process—eroding these ancient glacial deposits and naturally sorting minerals by size and density. Dense minerals can become concentrated in layers of beach sand known as placer deposits.
